CALL FOR INNOVATIVE IDEAS in Hindi Grassroots Initiatives for Management and Protection of Natural Resources To identify and support small and innovative development projects that manage precious natural resources efficiently, the World Bank's New Delhi office is hosting the second India Development Marketplace (IDM) .
Proposals received under this year's theme "Grassroots Initiatives for Management and Protection of Natural Resources" are currently being assessed. Twenty innovative concepts will be selected. Those whose proposals are selected will be informed in March and they will be required to exhibit at the Development Marketplace that will take place in New Delhi April 2007. Winners will be awarded an equivalent of US$20,000* as a start-up grant to implement the concept during a two-year period. THEMES
Protection and conservation of forests, wildlife and biodiversity; Development of watersheds and management of common property resources, including groundwater recharge; Promotion of sustainable agriculture, including through organic farming, integrated pest management and water efficient crops; Improvement in quality of air, drinking water, sanitation using better technologies and management; Generation and use of renewable energy, including solar power, wind power, biomass based fuels and converting waste to energy; Protection and management of water resources, including marine and aquatic biodiversity; Sustainable livelihoods for natural resource-dependent communities;
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The proposals will be assessed on:
Innovation - The proposal must demonstrate an idea which is a new approach either rural or urban under the theme and should involve the community; Results – It should have clear and measurable results that have a direct impact on management and protection of natural resources and benefit the community; Sustainability – The social innovators should have the capacity to implement the idea and the idea has the potential to continue beyond IDM funding.; Replicability – It must demonstrate that it can be successfully implemented, replicated elsewhere and scaled-up.
Proposals that reflect the following will receive additional weightage:
Equitable benefits: The benefits flowing from the innovation should be spread widely among the community and not be limited to a chosen few, an elite or a cartel that makes the innovation its “business” for personal profit Gender and youth: An element of gender parity, women’s empowerment and creating new opportunities for improving the quality of life of women and youth through participation should be built into the scheme in its formulation, execution and outcomes.
