The World Bank in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the European Union, UKs DfID, GTZ and SDC are organising an International Conference on Adaptation to Climate Variability and Climate Change, from December 7-8, 2006, at New Delhi India.

>>>>  Agenda of Conference

This event is in response to an increasing recognition by India and the international community that there are significant implications of climate variability and climate change on human and natural systems, including agriculture, water, forestry, health, industry and energy sectors. Therefore, adaptation to increased climate variability and climate change remains a crucial response strategy with a potential to reduce the adverse effects of increased climate risk.

Over the last two years, the World Bank has been managing a multi-sectoral study, “Addressing Vulnerability to Climate Variability and Climate Change Through an Assessment of Adaptation Issues and Options” to identify ways to enhance the consideration of climate and climate related issues in India’s development process. The findings of this study are intended to assist in the formulation of action programs within India at the state levels and support the development of the policy framework for vulnerability reduction and adaptation measures. The implementation of the study has been supported by several state agencies and the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The study is nearing completion and a draft synthesis report will be available during the conference.

Objectives of the conference :

-  Discuss the emerging study results and recommendations for consideration by conference participants.
-  Provide a forum for the exchange of information on recent developments, programs and challenges in India, with the aim of increasing awareness on the adaptation challenge and implications for the development and implementation of climate-related policies and programs and strengthening commitment to future strategies and programs. T
Take stock of the state of the art on adaptation knowledge and practice in India and globally, and provide a reference framework and guidance for India’s emerging adaptation strategies and programs in a holistic and multi-sectoral fashion.
