FACTS: HIV/AIDS in INDIA
Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Manipur, and Nagaland account for some 70% of India’s HIV infections.
HIV prevalence among high-risk groups is down in select states:
• Andhra Pradesh: 22.08% in 2006 - from 24.90% in 1998.
• Maharashtra: 12.9% in 2006 - from 16.00% in 1998.
• Tamil Nadu: 10% in 2006 - from 16.30% in 1998.
• Karnataka: 9.19% in 2006 - from 16.70% in 1998.

Third National AIDS Control Project (NACP - III)
This project is financed by IDA, the arm of the World Bank that provides no-interest credits to the most needy countries. The World Bank is helping India to curb the spread and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS in the country. The Government of India (GOI) has embarked on the ambitious goal of halting and reversing the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2011, ahead of the 2015 target of the 6th Millennium Development Goal.
